This is a new blog that will be mostly dedicated to the environment and emvironmental issues.
The volume of solid waste generated in the country daily is getting to alarming and dangerous levels. Anywhere you go in the country, you will observe heaps (or mountains) of waste by the roadsides. Apart from aesthetic considerations, the wastes are threats to human health. Yet, these are potential sources of renewable energy that are not being exploited.
A country like Sweden is importing waste to generate energy while here in Nigeria, we seem not to know what to do with the abundant waste the Almighty has given us through our huge population. No wonder one commentator said that Nigeria is a paradox. A country with huge oil reserves that still import petroleum products. A country with plenty of arable land that still imports food. A country with many rivers and creeks and yet import frozen fish. What a paradox of a country!
Let all governments at the Federal, State and Local levels start thinking on the potential benefits that could be obtained from our solid wastes. The benefits are unlimited. Studies have been carried out by various agencies of the Federal Government but the results of these studies end up on the bookshelves of the Ministries.
The Federal Ministry of Environment should tell the nation what happened to the reports of the studies on municipal solid wastes commissioned in thirteen states of the federation between 2001 - 2003.
The government spent spent a huge amount of money on the consultants and experts who produced beautiful reports. And that was the end of the story. No follow up. Those files should be dusted and reviewed. Nigeria's energy revolution should not not come from only oil. We have other sources. Let us harness all of them.
Welcome to my blog and see you next time.
